Early Intervention Coordinator/Teacher of the Deaf
Program: Parent Infant Program for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
Location: Spokane, WA
Salary: $70K-$85K, depending on experience
Reports to: Education Director
Position Summary
The Early Intervention Specialist who is a certified Teacher of the Deaf to supports infants and toddlers (birth–3) who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families, with a focus on listening and spoken language development, communication, family education, and effective use of hearing technology.
This role blends individualized home-based services with leading a weekly toddler group, equipping parents to integrate communication and learning into everyday routines.
The position requires a self-driven and organized professional with a passion for teaching children who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as local travel and close collaboration with Family Resource Coordinators (FRCs) and multiple state and community agencies.
Other duties may include attending and participating in quarterly family nights, our signature annual fundraiser Hoedown for HOPE, monthly team meetings, and ongoing professional development and continuing educational training.
Key Responsibilities
Early Intervention Services
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized services for infants and toddlers (birth–3) who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families, in their homes or natural learning environments.
- Coach and support parents with strategies for communication, listening, language development, and effective use of hearing technology.
- Embed listening and language activities into families’ everyday routines.
- Partner with the Audiologist to ensure devices (hearing aids, cochlear implants, molds, etc.) are functioning properly and worn during all waking hours.
- Document progress, including daily service notes, evaluation data, and audiological/demographic information.
- Attend IFSP/IEP meetings and collaborate with state and local agencies to ensure continuity of services.
Team Collaboration & Compliance
- Serve as an active member of the Early Intervention (E.I.) team in Spokane County, collaborating with five community providers.
- Follow up on referrals, participate in IFSP development, and support student transitions to preschool.
- Conduct assessments of communication, listening, and language skills to inform IFSP goal development and implementation.
- Attend team meetings and trainings to remain current with best practices in deaf education and early intervention.
Toddler Group Instruction
- Lead a weekly toddler group session for children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.
- Plan and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum incorporating play, music, discovery, and language-rich activities.
- Provide parent education during each toddler group session, equipping families with tools for raising a child with hearing loss.
- Maintain records, generate reports, and prepare materials as needed.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Deaf Education, Early Intervention, Speech-Language Pathology, or related field (required).
- Washington State certification as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or eligibility to obtain (preferred).
- Commitment to the Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) approach; interest in obtaining further LSL credentials (AVT or AVEd) preferred.
- Basic knowledge of American Sign Language.
- Knowledge of childhood hearing loss, communication approaches, and experience with amplification/cochlear implants.
- Experience working with families in early intervention or related fields.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Passion for teaching and a commitment to family-centered, strengths-based practices.
Special Education Preschool Teacher
Program: Preschool Program for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
Location: Spokane, WA
Salary: Starting at ~$71.5k, depending on experience
Reports to: Education Director
Position Summary
Spokane HOPE is seeking a dedicated Preschool Teacher of the Deaf or Early Childhood Special Educator to join our multidisciplinary team. This full-time position supports children who are deaf or hard of hearing in developing listening and spoken language skills with hearing technology such as cochlear implants and hearing aids.
The classroom teacher works collaboratively with a team that includes speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and instructional assistants to provide individualized, high-quality instruction. Team collaboration, family engagement, and ongoing professional learning are essential components of this role, ensuring the best possible outcomes for each student.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement daily lesson plans that are developmentally appropriate and aligned with each child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), Washington State Early Learning Guidelines, and Spokane HOPE curriculum.
- Create a classroom environment that promotes independence, confidence, creativity, and respect for materials and people, and fosters experiential learning.
- Use authentic, culturally appropriate materials for learning and literacy.
- Engage individual students, small groups, and large groups in activities that support listening and spoken language development.
- Assess and observe students throughout the day, collecting language samples and observations to inform goal setting and progress tracking.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to provide diagnostic information and develop instruction based on students’ auditory, speech, and language needs.
- Support students’ optimal auditory access and use of amplification, including conducting daily listening checks, troubleshooting equipment, and training students in age-appropriate independence with their devices.
- Provide guidance and support to the classroom Instructional Assistant to maintain health, safety, and educational well-being.
- Foster a welcoming environment for parents and caregivers, empowering them to support their child’s development.
- Participate in after-hours events such as the annual Hoedown for HOPE fundraiser, Quarterly Parent Nights, Santa Breakfast, and Lemonade Stand.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid Washington State Teacher Certification in Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education or Early Childhood Special Education.
- Experience with preschool-aged children and/or children who are deaf or hard of hearing is preferred but not required.
- Commitment to listening and spoken language approach and Spokane HOPE’s mission.
- Interest in obtaining or maintaining LSL Cert AVT or AVEd certification is desirable.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills; bilingual candidates encouraged to apply.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team and families.
- Professional demeanor and flexibility; ability to participate in after-hours events and occasional non-standard work hours.
- ASL skills are also preferred but not required.
